TIGER SNAKES

Often mistaken for blacksnakes, the Tasmanian tigersnake varies a lot in colour, the most common being a glossy black. Other colours are gold, tan, grey or green. Some have stripes and some don't. Tigersnakes on the Tasmanian mainland don't usually exceed 1.5 metres and 1 metre would be the most common size.
As a general rule the tigersnakes have a broader thicker set head which could be described as shovel or heart shaped. When the snake is not too stressed its head is wider than its neck. there is a scale between its eyes which is wider than that of the copperhead's but if you can see that, you're too darn close !
Small tigers feed mainly on lizards and frogs. As they grow they will take young birds and a lot of introduced pests like rats, mice and young rabbits.
Tigers will not attack unless provoked. their venom is one of the world's most toxic. They are EXTREMELY VENOMOUS When upset, the head and neck flatten out and it acts like a cobra, but this is usually a bluff.
